Joshua Weil, Theatre

Joshua Weil originally began studies in Astronomy at the University of Toledo before switching majors to Theatre and German Literature. Josh graduated with a BFA in Theatrical Design and a BA with Honors in German Literature in 1991. Following two years as a graduate assistant in Stage Design at Purdue with his wife Tracy, both Josh and Tracy transferred to Ohio University in 1993. Joshua will be completing his MFA in Stage Design throughout the coming year after a thirteen-year hiatus. He has also interned at the Universitaet Goetheanum in Basil, Switzerland in 1989-90 during the fall of the Berlin Wall.

While studying to become a stage designer, Josh developed an all-encompassing passion for scenic painting leading to a year of specialized training in all aspects of the scenic arts at the prestigious Cobalt Studios, two hours from New York City in 1994-95.

Throughout much of his training and in the years since, Josh and his wife have worked professionally in a wide range of venues including - theater, dance, opera, television, motion picture, commercial, and residential – mainly as scenic artists, while operating a decorative painting business, Faux Real. Some scenic painting highlights include: “ Tommy, The National Tour”, “Cabaret” on Broadway, the motion picture “8 Mile”, Star Southfield Movie Theaters, the Frontier Texas Museum in Abalene, Texas, Santa Fe Opera, and Utah Shakespearean Festival.

This will be Josh’s first full year as technical director, stage designer, and Design/Tech instructor at TSA after taking over the position in November 2007. Josh has been married 14 years, together with Tracy since 1989. They have two daughters, Madeline – six, and Lauren – three, and their newest addition, Chase Marlin, was born on September 18th, 2008
